Description: This page contains three sketches in a vertical format of events and places during the 1885 Resistance. The first image is of “the Muster of the Tenth Royal and Queen’s Own at the Drill Shed, Toronto, Saturday, March 28th”. The second image is of “the Fort at Battleford in which the Mounted Police and Citizens Took Shelter and Were Besieged by the Rebels”. The third image is of “the town of Battleford, Occupied by the Rebels and Indians, March 30th”. The last image shows rather stereotypically the looting of the town by hungry First Nations. The juxtaposition of the “order” and “loyalty” of the English-Canadian soldiers in the in the first image with the “anarchy” and “savagery” of the First Nations warriors is very stark. The conflict of “Civilization vs. Savagery” was the main paradigm that emerged out of English-speaking Canada during the 1885 Resistance. Unfortunately, it would have a grave impact upon how government dealt with First Nations and Métis after 1885. In addition, contemporary readers of this journal did not understand the underlying government policy that drove First Nations to take up arms and plunder the settlement of Battleford against the wishes of Chief Poundmaker. On the opposite side is a list of Canadian soldiers killed and wounded during the 1885 Resistance.
