Description: This page contains three images. The first image, based on a photograph by Cooke, entitled “The 65th Battalion (Mont Royal Rifles) at Port Arthur” (now Thunder Bay, Ontario). The second image, based on a photograph by Hunter & Co., is entitled “Lieut.-Col. Gray M.P.P. commanding the Toronto Field Battery”. The third image, based on a diagram and a description by a Toronto Globe correspondent is entitled “A Zareba in the North-West”. This image is particularly important because it is one of the few representations of two defensive zarebas built during the Battle of Batoche (May 9-12, 1885) by General Middleton’s forces. The intent of the zarebas was to prevent the Métis sharpshooters from killing any more of the inexperienced Canadian troops. They also provided them with a place to regroup and relax before they engaged in the offensive. The remains of the largest zareba can be seen at the Batoche National Historic Site, Parks Canada.
